BGP Day 206-Disturbed

September 8th, 2010 in Randy's Blog

Matthew 2:3 – When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him.”

I’ve probably read these words a thousand times or more but I don’t know if they ever hit me quite like they did today.

Disturbed?

That’s an interesting word to use there.  It reminds me that the Good News doesn’t always bring about joy and open arms in those who are hearing it.

Some people are disturbed by it.

I can understand Herod’s reaction to the news.  His kingdom was evil and ruthless.  The announcement of Jesus was a major threat to him.

But “all Jerusalem”?  Granted, I’m sure there’s a bit of hyperbole there.  But still.  There were a great number of people who were disturbed by the birth of the Messiah.

As I reflected though a thought occurred to me.

Shouldn’t we all be disturbed by the message of Jesus?  Some of us are for good – moved toward life change.  And some of us are for evil – threatened and angry.

The worst place to be in is when we’re indifferent to the Son of God.

So the question becomes, how is the Gospel disturbing your life lately?

Is it pushing beyond your own desires and wants?  Beyond the small hopes and dreams?  Beyond comfort and small faith to a God-sized life?

If not, why not?

Or is the message inconvenient because it threatens our little kingdom like it did Herod?

Food for thought….
